Customer Review: Great little all-in-one, but not very intelligent

I have this lexmark printer for almost 2 years now and it is an excellent Laser printer. I have found it to be very reliable with space for 250 pages of paper. Once it is running it prints fast. However the software that drives the unit is quite basic, so let me tell you the things I don’t like:

1. Even if you have just printed a 100 pages, when you decide to do something else like send a fax or a scan, the unit insists on warming up first. it takes about 20 seconds. However when you want to send a fax it is very annoying that you need to wait 20 seconds. During this 20 secs you can’t even enter the fax number of the recipient. It seems like the machine behaves as 4 separate devices printer, copier, scanner and fax and they don’t realise each others existence.

2. Before this I had a HP G85 all in one. It had a smiliar specified scanner, but the lexmark definitely takes a lot longer to scan a page at the same resolution. Also it does not render the colours very accurately (particularly not light coloured backgrounds). Up to 150 dpi scanning time is reasonable, but 200 dpi or over and you better go and drink a cup of tea.

3. The software suite supplied with the unit is really basic and consists of all the necessary drivers. However there is no facility to e.g. see a fax log from your PC or pre-program the speed dial keys.

If you want a low cost, cheap to run liable printer that you will use once in a while for faxing, scanning etc, than this is the one. If you use all functions regualrly I would say you are better off with a HP or brother unit.

As a copier the unit works really well and is quite fast after the warm up time is completed
