When you decide to find a printer for all your photo printing needs, you will want to check out a few and see which one is going to be the best for your projects. The dot matrix printers are sometimes called impact matrix printers. This printer has a print head that goes back and forth on the page and a ribbon that strikes the paper, bringing to mind a typewriter.
The dot matrix printers work by impact. The dots this printer makes are made by a metal rod or pin. This pin is powered by an electromagnet or solenoid. They either use small levers or use direct power to make the pin go forward and strike the paper.
In front of the paper and ribbon is a plate which guides the pin to the correct spot. These plates are usually made of an artificial jewel. The most commonly used are rubies and sapphires. The print head which is the moving part of the printer normally prints line by line. Dot matrix printers normally have one line of dot making pins on the print head.
This type of printer is very durable and can last for years. This is why during the 1970s and 1980s, the dot matrix printer was considered the best printer for the money. The first dot matrix printer to become popular with consumers was the Epson MX-80. This model was affordable and had good printing capabilities even though we think differently now. One problem though was the noise they made while printing. Because of the impact of the pins hitting the paper when they were printing, they were quite noisy in the office environment.
The MX-80 did not have a very high dpi either, with 60 dpi horizontal and 72 dpi vertical. This created a problem in the office setting because the more photocopies that were made the worse the quality of the document became. There was a software program for printer enhancement that took care of the problem for awhile. This software worked on the premise of running a program for double printing the document but it was unhandy because if the program was not run first it did not work. They also did not work on all programs.
Attempts were made to use single strike and multi-strike ribbons so the ribbons would not wear out so quickly. These printers worked on the same principle as the typewriter ribbon. The best printing would be when the ribbon was fresh and the more it was used, the lighter it became.
In the 1970 the LA30 was introduced to the market by Digital Equipment Corporation. The 30 character dot matrix printer used a different size of paper and printed 80 columns of uppercase letters only. This dot matrix printer was followed by the LA36 which was a better printer and was the printer of choice for some time. The following were introduced after the LA36: LA180, LS120, LA120, LA34, LA38 and the LA12.
Dot matrix is not used much today except in certain professions such as multi-part stationery used by bank tellers. Data logging and aviation also prefer the tractor feed paper usage. One of the reasons for this is the dot matrix printer is easier to use in operating conditions less than desirable to the more modern printers.
